How do I close an email account?

Each Yahoo account becomes increasingly open to spam and I do not know who sells my email address to advertisers. I'd mainly like to know how to close old accounts after I've moved on, but secondarily, if anyone knows, I'd like to know how stay off of junk mail lists altogether so I'm not forever playing "escape."
